A story is what something is about, e.g. games, book and films.
A narrative is a retelling of something that has happened. Narrative is not the story itself, this is how we feel about it.
3 act narrative structure.
The first act - is usually used for exposition, to establish the main characters, their relationships and the world they live in. Later in the first act, a dynamic, on-screen incident occurs that confronts the main character
The second act - Your main character begins confronting the series of obstacles standing in his/her way. They also reveal more about themselves (backstory & secrets) and what motivates them.
The third act - Things pick up speed now as the protagonist moves faster and closer to achieving their goal, putting the final pieces of the plot’s “puzzle” together.
5 act classic hollywood structure.
1. exposition - location, characters.
2. development - more information on characters.
3. complication - something that happens.
4. climax - problems get solved.
5. resolution - happy ending.
A linear narrative starts a story at the beginning, goes on through the middle, and ends at the end. Hollywood 5 act structure. Linear films - Lord of the rings, Little Miss Sunshine and Fight Club.
A non-linear narrative is one that doesn't. All 5 act happen but in a different order. Non Linear films - Pulp Fiction, Slumdog Millionaire, Forest Gump and Kill Bill.
